I am an adjunct assistant professor at the Department of Forest Resources at University of Minnesota. I am a comparative social scientist with a background in environmental politics, policy and economics. I completed my Ph.D. in Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Michigan in 2011.
My research focuses on institutions and environmental governance as they relate to farmers’ livelihoods and land use, biodiversity conservation, climate adaptation, and environmental services valuation. I am particularly interested in examining how farmers’ land use decisions affect forest conservation and their own ability to cope with environmental change effects. I focus on regions where vulnerable rural communities and biodiversity coexist, such as the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve in Mexico, Maya Biosphere Reserve in Guatemala, Kawal Wildlife Sanctuary and Amrabad Tiger Reserve in India, Kangra district in India, as well as internationally adjoining protected areas in the Americas.
